Hello everyone and welcome back to Bileo English.
안녕하세요 여러분, Bileo English에 다시 오신 것을 환영합니다.
I'm Bella.
저는 Bella예요.
And I'm Leo. Such a pleasure to have you all here with us today.
저는 Leo입니다. 오늘도 함께해 주셔서 정말 반가워요.
Leo, can I tell you something? Last week was genuinely hard for me.
Leo, 저 한 가지 말해도 될까요? 지난주가 정말 힘들었어요.
Really? What happened, Bella?
진짜요? 무슨 일이 있었어요, Bella?
My best friend moved abroad for work.
제 제일 친한 친구가 일 때문에 해외로 이사를 갔어요.
Ten years of friendship, and suddenly she is so far away.
10년 우정이었는데, 갑자기 너무 멀어졌어요.
At the airport, when we said goodbye, I just froze completely.
공항에서 작별 인사를 할 때, 저는 그냥 완전히 굳어버렸어요.
The words would not come out at all.
말이 전혀 나오지 않았어요.
Oh no. That sounds really painful. What did you do?
세상에. 정말 아팠겠다. 그래서 어떻게 했어요?
Nothing. I just stood there and waved. It felt like the worst farewell in history.
아무것도 못 했어요. 그냥 거기 서서 손만 흔들었어요. 역대 최악의 작별 인사처럼 느껴졌어요.
I know that feeling so well. The heart is completely full and the mouth is completely empty.
그 느낌 너무 잘 알아요. 마음은 꽉 찬데 입이 완전히 닫혀버리는 거요.
Exactly. And for days afterward, I kept asking myself: why did I not say something more meaningful?
맞아요. 그리고 며칠 동안 계속 스스로에게 물어봤어요. 왜 더 의미 있는 말을 못 했을까 하고요.
Bella, I have done the same thing.
Bella, 저도 똑같이 한 적 있어요.
My university friend moved away and I just said "okay, bye" and walked off.
대학 친구가 멀리 이사 가는데 그냥 "그래, 잘 가" 하고 가버렸어요.
Leo, no! That is genuinely terrible. How did your friend react to that?
Leo, 안 돼요! 그건 진짜 너무하다. 그 친구는 어떤 반응이었어요?
Honestly, I have no idea. But I still feel bad about it.
솔직히 모르겠어요. 근데 지금도 미안한 마음이 있어요.
So today we are learning how to say a real, heartfelt goodbye in English?
그래서 오늘은 영어로 진심을 담아 진짜 작별 인사하는 법을 배우는 거군요?
Exactly that. Four phrases to help anyone express what they truly feel in that difficult moment.
바로 그거예요. 그 어려운 순간에 진심을 표현하는 데 도움이 될 표현 네 가지예요.
No more frozen moments and silent waves at departure gates.
더 이상 공항에서 굳어버린 채 침묵하며 손만 흔들지 않아도 되겠네요.
So why is saying goodbye in English such a challenge for so many people?
그런데 왜 영어로 작별 인사하기가 이렇게 어려울까요?
The problem is that most people only know simple words.
문제는 대부분의 사람들이 단순한 말밖에 모른다는 거예요.
Words like "bye" or "good luck." That is really all.
"bye"라든가 "good luck"이요. 그게 전부예요.
Those words are fine for casual moments. But they cannot carry the real weight of a meaningful goodbye.
그 말들도 가벼운 상황엔 괜찮아요. 근데 진짜 작별의 무게를 담기에는 부족하죠.
Right. And "good luck" especially can sound cold. Almost like you do not care at all.
맞아요. 특히 "good luck"은 차갑게 들릴 수 있어요. 신경도 안 쓰는 것처럼요.
Yes. I once said "good luck" to a close friend at a very emotional moment. The look on her face.
네. 저도 한번은 정말 감정적인 순간에 친구한테 "good luck"이라고 했는데, 그 표정이란.
That phrase belongs before a test, not at an airport gate during a real farewell.
그 말은 시험 전에 어울리는 거지, 진짜 이별의 자리에선 아니잖아요.
Farewell. Do you know this word, everyone?
Farewell. 여러분, 이 단어 아세요?
Farewell is a deeper, more emotional kind of goodbye. It is used when the parting feels truly significant.
Farewell은 더 깊고 감정이 담긴 작별 인사예요. 헤어짐이 진짜로 의미 있게 느껴질 때 쓰는 말이에요.
More formal than "bye," but it captures something real. A sense of genuine depth and care.
"bye"보다 격식적이지만, 그 안에 진심이 담겨 있어요. 깊은 감정과 배려의 느낌이요.
The phrases we learn today are not formal at all. They are warm, honest, and easy to say to anyone.
오늘 배울 표현들은 전혀 격식적이지 않아요. 따뜻하고 솔직하고, 누구에게나 쉽게 쓸 수 있어요.
Simple words that travel straight from the heart to the heart.
마음에서 바로 상대방 마음으로 전달되는 말들이요.
Before we continue, we have a small request.
계속하기 전에, 작은 부탁이 있어요.

Alright. Let's get into the good stuff.
자, 이제 본격적으로 시작해 볼게요.
Imagine standing with your best friend at the departure gate. The bags are checked in. The moment is here.
공항 출발 게이트에 가장 친한 친구와 서 있다고 상상해 보세요. 짐도 맡겼고, 그 순간이 왔어요.
Everything feels bigger than usual in that moment.
그 순간 모든 게 평소보다 더 크게 느껴져요.
And the normal everyday things people say just do not feel like enough anymore.
그리고 평소에 늘 하는 말들은 더 이상 충분하지 않은 것 같아요.
The first thing most people want to communicate is this simple but powerful truth: I am going to miss this person.
그 순간 대부분의 사람들이 전하고 싶은 건 이 단순하지만 강력한 사실이에요. 이 사람이 보고 싶을 거라고요.
How do we say that in English?
그걸 영어로 어떻게 말해요?
The phrase is: "I'm really going to miss you."
이 표현을 쓰세요. "I'm really going to miss you."
"I'm really going to miss you."
"I'm really going to miss you."
That word "really" does all the work.
"really"라는 단어 하나가 모든 걸 해요.
It is the difference between something polite people say automatically and something that comes from the heart.
자동으로 뱉는 예의상 하는 말과 진심에서 나오는 말의 차이가 바로 이 단어예요.
Without "really," it sounds like something people say out of habit.
"really" 없이는 습관적으로 내뱉는 말처럼 들려요.
With it, the words carry genuine, personal weight.
있으면 진짜 감정이 담긴 개인적인 말이 돼요.
By the way, the word "miss" is very important here. Do you know this word, everyone?
그런데, "miss"라는 단어가 여기서 아주 중요해요. 여러분, 이 단어 아세요?
Miss means to feel that deep, aching sadness because someone you love is not with you anymore.
Miss는 사랑하는 사람이 곁에 없을 때 느끼는 깊고 아린 그리움, 그 감정이에요.
So the full phrase carries this meaning:
그러니까 이 표현 전체는 이런 의미예요.
Your presence matters to me deeply, and I will feel it when it is gone.
당신의 존재가 나에게 정말 소중하고, 없으면 허전할 거라고요.
That is genuinely moving.
정말 감동적이네요.
It tells the other person something true: you are not replaceable, and your absence will be felt.
상대방에게 진실을 전해주는 거예요. 당신은 대체 불가능하고, 당신의 빈자리가 느껴질 거라고요.
People carry phrases like this with them for a very long time. They stay. Long after the airport. Long after the flight lands.
이런 표현은 정말 오랫동안 마음에 남아요. 떠나지 않아요. 공항을 떠난 후에도, 비행기가 착륙한 후에도요.
That is so beautiful. What comes next?
너무 아름다워요. 다음은 뭐예요?
Now picture a slightly different moment.
이번엔 조금 다른 순간이에요.
Someone close to you is heading somewhere entirely new. A different country or city.
친한 사람이 완전히 새로운 곳으로 가요. 다른 나라나 도시로요.
A fresh start far away. And the worry and care both set in at the same time.
새로운 시작이 저 멀리에서 기다리고 있는 거죠. 걱정과 배려가 동시에 밀려오는 순간이에요.
In that moment, how does someone show care and concern without sounding heavy or dramatic?
그 순간, 무겁거나 극적으로 들리지 않으면서 걱정과 배려를 어떻게 표현하죠?
Whatever is said, it needs to feel warm. Not like a command. Not like a warning.
무슨 말을 하든 따뜻하게 들려야 해요. 명령처럼도, 경고처럼도 들리면 안 되고요.
The phrase is: "Take care of yourself, okay?"
이 표현을 쓰세요. "Take care of yourself, okay?"
"Take care of yourself, okay?"
"Take care of yourself, okay?"
Listen to that "okay?" at the end. That one small word changes everything.
끝에 있는 "okay?"를 들어보세요. 그 작은 단어 하나가 모든 걸 바꿔요.
It turns the phrase into a gentle, caring wish.
표현이 부드러운 바람이 돼요.
It does not sound like a rule to follow. It sounds like something said from a place of genuine love.
규칙처럼 들리지 않아요. 깊은 사랑에서 나오는 말처럼 들려요.
Exactly. That phrase is saying: I care about your well-being, and I am going to be thinking of you out there.
맞아요. 이 표현은 이렇게 말하는 거예요. 당신의 안녕이 마음에 걸리고, 저기서도 항상 생각할 거예요.
I wish I had said that to my university friend instead of just walking off without a single word.
그냥 말 한 마디 없이 가버리지 말고 이 말을 했어야 했는데.
It is never too late. One message today can still carry all of that care and warmth right now.
아직 늦지 않았어요. 오늘 메시지 하나가 그 모든 배려와 따뜻함을 지금도 전할 수 있어요.
Maybe I actually will send that message.
진짜로 그 메시지를 보낼지도 몰라요.
That is exactly the spirit of this phrase. It reaches out even across time and distance.
그게 바로 이 표현의 정신이에요. 시간과 거리를 넘어서 닿는 말이거든요.
After the goodbye moment is over, the friendship still needs to breathe and survive. Distance alone should not end a good relationship.
작별 인사의 순간이 끝난 후에도, 우정은 계속 숨 쉬고 살아남아야 해요. 거리 하나가 관계를 끝낼 수는 없어요.
But it does happen, and it happens more often than people expect.
근데 그런 일이 생겨요. 그것도 사람들이 예상하는 것보다 훨씬 자주요.
Life gets busy, communication slowly fades, and the silence takes over entirely.
바빠지고, 연락이 줄고, 침묵이 완전히 자리 잡아버리죠.
That is exactly why this next phrase matters so deeply. Please remember it: "Keep in touch."
바로 그래서 다음 표현이 정말 깊이 중요한 거예요. 꼭 기억해 주세요. "Keep in touch."
Keep in touch. Do you know this phrase, everyone?
Keep in touch. 여러분, 이 표현 아세요?
"Keep in touch" means stay connected with someone. Write them. Call them. Do not let the silence grow between you.
"Keep in touch"는 누군가와 계속 연결되어 있으라는 말이에요. 문자해요, 전화해요, 사이에 침묵이 쌓이지 않도록요.
It is a promise and an open door at the same time. Like saying: this friendship is not something I am willing to lose.
약속이면서 동시에 열린 문이에요. 이렇게 말하는 거예요. 나는 이 우정을 잃고 싶지 않아요.
"Keep in touch."
"Keep in touch."
Another warm way to say this is "let's keep in touch" or "please keep in touch." Both sound very natural.
따뜻하게 표현하는 다른 방법도 있어요. "let's keep in touch"나 "please keep in touch"도 자연스럽고 좋아요.
All versions of this phrase carry the same core meaning: this connection between us is something genuinely worth protecting, no matter the distance.
어떤 표현을 쓰든 같은 핵심 의미를 담고 있어요. 우리 사이의 이 연결은 거리가 얼마나 떨어져도 진심으로 지킬 가치가 있다고요.
And when someone hears "keep in touch," something lands in them that goes deeper than just those three small words.
그리고 누군가 "keep in touch"를 들을 때, 그 세 단어 이상의 무언가가 마음에 닿아요.
What do they hear exactly?
정확히 뭘 듣는 건가요?
They hear this: the story between us is not over yet.
이걸 들어요. 우리 사이의 이야기는 아직 끝나지 않았어요.
There is still so much more to come for both of us.
우리 두 사람 모두에게 앞으로 더 많은 것들이 기다리고 있다고요.
That reframing changes the whole goodbye.
그 시각의 전환이 작별 인사 전체를 바꿔버리네요.
And now the last phrase. This one is my personal favorite because it completely transforms the feeling of a goodbye.
이제 마지막 표현이에요. 이게 제 최애인 이유는, 작별의 느낌을 완전히 바꿔주거든요.
What does it do to that feeling, Bella?
그 느낌을 어떻게 바꿔줘요, Bella?
It refuses to let the goodbye be a closed door. The phrase is: "This isn't goodbye. Just see you later."
이 표현은 goodbye가 닫힌 문이 되는 걸 거부해요. 표현은 이거예요. "This isn't goodbye. Just see you later."
"This isn't goodbye. Just see you later."
"This isn't goodbye. Just see you later."
There is so much genuine hope carried in those words.
그 말 안에 진짜 희망이 가득 담겨 있어요.
They say: we will meet again soon. This distance is only temporary.
우리는 곧 다시 만날 거고, 이 거리는 잠시뿐이라고 말하는 거예요.
It takes what could feel like a final, heavy, painful ending and turns it into something open, hopeful, and forward-looking.
무겁고 최종적인 끝처럼 느껴질 수 있는 걸, 열려 있고 희망차고 앞을 바라보는 것으로 바꿔줘요.
And it works because it is almost always true. Most goodbyes are not goodbye forever.
그리고 거의 항상 사실이니까 힘이 있는 거예요. 대부분의 goodbye는 영원한 이별이 아니잖아요.
Bittersweet. Do you know this word, everyone?
Bittersweet. 여러분, 이 단어 아세요?
Bittersweet describes something that holds both happiness and sadness at exactly the same time.
Bittersweet는 기쁨과 슬픔을 동시에 정확히 같은 순간에 담고 있는 걸 말해요.
Every single heartfelt goodbye is bittersweet.
진심을 담은 모든 작별 인사는 bittersweet해요.
There is love living inside the sadness, and there is real sadness living inside the love.
슬픔 안에 사랑이 살아 있고, 사랑 안에 진짜 슬픔이 살아 있어요.
And this phrase, "this isn't goodbye," holds both of those feelings gently without making either one disappear.
그리고 "this isn't goodbye"는 그 두 감정을 어느 것도 사라지게 하지 않으면서 부드럽게 담아줘요.
That is what makes it such a generous and beautiful thing to say.
그래서 이게 정말 너그럽고 아름다운 말인 거예요.
It gives the other person something real and hopeful to hold onto.
상대방에게 붙잡을 수 있는 진짜 희망을 줘요.
So let's now put all four phrases together. Picture the airport scene one final time.
그럼 이제 네 가지 표현을 모두 합쳐봐요. 공항 장면을 마지막으로 한 번 더 떠올려 보세요.
"I'm really going to miss you. Take care of yourself, okay?"
"I'm really going to miss you. Take care of yourself, okay?"
Then: "Keep in touch. This isn't goodbye. Just see you later."
그리고 이렇게요. "Keep in touch. This isn't goodbye. Just see you later."
Now that is a real farewell. Not just an "okay, bye" and a wave at the terminal.
이제 이게 진짜 작별 인사네요. 그냥 "okay, bye"하고 터미널에서 손만 흔드는 게 아니에요.
Every single phrase carries real weight.
모든 표현 하나하나에 진짜 무게가 있어요.
Every one of them is saying the same thing: this friendship matters deeply to me and to us.
하나하나가 다 같은 말을 해요. 이 우정이 나에게, 우리에게 정말 소중하다고요.
That is the real difference between a goodbye that stings for days and one that someone carries warmly in their own heart for a lifetime.
그게 바로 며칠 동안 아픔만 남기는 작별과 평생 자신만의 마음속에 따뜻하게 새겨지는 작별의 진짜 차이네요.
Alright. Let's review everything we learned today.
자, 오늘 배운 걸 복습해 봐요.
We talked about how to say a real, heartfelt goodbye in English using four simple but powerful phrases.
오늘은 영어로 진심을 담은 작별 인사를 하는 법, 그 단순하지만 강력한 표현 네 가지를 배웠어요.
"I'm really going to miss you." Say this when someone important is leaving your life for a while.
"I'm really going to miss you." 중요한 사람이 잠시 삶에서 떠날 때 이렇게 말해요.
The word "really" is the key. It shows the feeling is genuine and honest, not just something polite people say.
"really"가 핵심이에요. 감정이 진짜고 솔직하다는 걸 보여줘요. 그냥 예의상 하는 말이 아니에요.
"Take care of yourself, okay?" Use this to show care and worry when someone is heading somewhere new.
"Take care of yourself, okay?" 누군가가 새로운 곳으로 갈 때, 걱정과 배려를 담아 써요.
That small "okay?" at the end does everything. Warm, gentle, full of real love.
끝에 있는 "okay?"가 모든 걸 해요. 따뜻하고, 부드럽고, 진짜 사랑이 담겨 있어요.
"Keep in touch." A promise that the friendship continues regardless of the distance between you.
"Keep in touch." 거리와 상관없이 우정이 계속된다는 약속이에요.
Another version: "let's keep in touch" or "please keep in touch." All warm. All natural.
다른 버전으로는 "let's keep in touch"나 "please keep in touch"도 있어요. 다 따뜻하고 자연스러워요.
And the most powerful one: "This isn't goodbye. Just see you later."
그리고 가장 강력한 건요. "This isn't goodbye. Just see you later."
This phrase keeps the door wide open. It turns what could be a sad ending into something hopeful and full of light.
이 표현은 문을 활짝 열어둬요. 슬픈 끝이 될 수 있는 걸 희망차고 빛나는 것으로 바꿔줘요.
And the most important thing?
가장 중요한 건 뭐예요?
Goodbye does not have to be the last word. The right phrase keeps the door open for both people.
Goodbye가 마지막 말이 될 필요는 없어요. 올바른 표현 하나가 두 사람 모두를 위해 그 문을 열어둬요.
These phrases are a gift. And a gift is always meant to be given to someone who matters.
이 표현들은 선물이에요. 그리고 선물은 항상 소중한 사람에게 주라고 있는 거잖아요.
Practice them out loud. Say them to a mirror. The people in your life will feel every word of the difference.
소리 내서 연습해 보세요. 거울 앞에서 말해보세요. 삶의 소중한 사람들이 그 차이를 느낄 거예요.
So true.
맞는 말이에요.
Remember: even just one of these phrases is enough to completely transform what could have been a difficult, awkward, or painful goodbye moment.
기억하세요. 네 가지 중 딱 하나만으로도 어렵고 어색하고 아팠을 작별 인사를 완전히 바꿀 수 있어요.
Which one feels most natural to you? Think about that as you go through your day.
어떤 표현이 가장 자연스럽게 느껴지나요? 오늘 하루를 보내면서 생각해 보세요.
Everyone, you did a wonderful job today. These phrases take real courage to say out loud.
여러분, 오늘 정말 잘하셨어요. 이 표현들을 소리 내서 말하는 건 진짜 용기가 필요한 일이에요.
We have a question for you today, everyone.
오늘 여러분께 질문이 있어요.
Think of a goodbye you never quite got right. Maybe a friend, a teacher, or someone from a past chapter of your life.
제대로 작별 인사를 못 했던 사람을 떠올려 보세요. 친구, 선생님, 지나간 시절의 누군가.
Write a goodbye message for that person in the comments, using one phrase from today's lesson.
댓글에 오늘 배운 표현 하나를 써서 그 사람에게 작별 인사를 남겨주세요.
We will read every single comment. Hearing from you always makes our day so much brighter.
댓글 하나하나 다 읽을 거예요. 여러분의 메시지를 볼 때마다 하루가 훨씬 밝아지거든요.
And if someone close to you is facing a goodbye soon, share this episode with them right now.
그리고 주변에 곧 작별 인사를 해야 하는 분이 있다면, 지금 바로 이 에피소드를 공유해 주세요.
These phrases might give them exactly the words they have been quietly searching for in moments like this.
이 표현들이 그분이 이런 순간에 오래 찾고 있던 말을 찾는 데 도움이 될 수 있어요.
The right words are a small thing that can mean absolutely everything to the person on the receiving end.
올바른 말 하나가 아주 작은 것처럼 보여도, 듣는 사람에게는 모든 것이 될 수 있어요.
