Welcome back to Bileo English.
Bileo English에 다시 오신 걸 환영합니다.
Hey, everyone. I'm Jake.
안녕하세요, 여러분. 저는 Jake입니다.
And I'm Anna. So glad you are here today.
저는 Anna예요. 오늘 함께해주셔서 정말 기뻐요.
Anna, how was your morning?
Anna, 오늘 아침 어땠어요?
Honestly, a little slow. My coffee got cold before I finished it.
솔직히, 좀 느린 아침이었어요. 커피가 다 마시기도 전에 식어버렸거든요.
Oh no. That is the worst feeling.
아 이런. 그건 정말 최악이죠.
Right? But I am here now, and I am so excited.
그렇죠? 그래도 이렇게 왔고, 정말 설레요.
Same. Today's topic is something special.
저도요. 오늘 주제 정말 특별해요.
Yes. Today we are asking a really big question.
맞아요. 오늘 우리는 정말 큰 질문을 할 거예요.
Why is English so hard?
영어는 왜 이렇게 어려운 걸까요?
So many learners ask this. And we hear it all the time.
정말 많은 학습자들이 이 질문을 해요. 늘 듣고 있어요.
I asked myself this question for years. Today, we find out why.
저도 몇 년이나 스스로에게 이 질문을 했어요. 오늘 그 이유를 찾아봐요.
Jake, in simple words, what does it mean to find English hard?
Jake, 쉽게 말해서 영어가 어렵다는 게 무슨 뜻인가요?
It means people study for years, but still cannot speak.
몇 년을 공부했는데도 여전히 말을 못 한다는 거예요.
Yes. That is so frustrating. And it happens to so many learners.
맞아요. 정말 답답하죠. 정말 많은 학습자들이 겪는 일이에요.
So why does that happen? Why do people study and stay stuck?
그래서 왜 그런 걸까요? 공부해도 왜 계속 제자리일까요?
Think of learning English like learning to swim.
영어 배우는 걸 수영 배우는 것처럼 생각해보세요.
Learning to swim?
수영을요?
Imagine someone gives you a book about swimming.
누군가가 수영에 관한 책을 줬다고 상상해보세요.
You read every page. You understand all the rules.
처음부터 끝까지 읽었어요. 규칙도 다 이해했어요.
But if you never get in the water...
하지만 물에 한 번도 들어가지 않는다면...
There is no swimming. English works the same way.
수영을 못 하죠. 영어도 똑같아요.
Oh, that is a great point. The book is not enough.
오, 정말 좋은 포인트예요. 책만으로는 부족하죠.
Real practice is what matters. Getting in the water is everything.
실제 연습이 중요해요. 물에 직접 들어가는 게 전부예요.
So English feels hard because most people learn from books, not from real life.
그러니까 영어가 어려운 건 책으로만 배우고 실생활에서 안 써봐서군요.
Exactly. So let's talk about the real reasons. Tip number one.
정확해요. 그럼 진짜 이유를 얘기해볼게요. 팁 첫 번째예요.
Tip one: nobody taught you to listen first.
팁 1: 아무도 먼저 듣는 법을 가르쳐주지 않았어요.
Listen first? What does that mean?
먼저 듣는다고요? 그게 무슨 뜻이에요?
Think of language learning like filling a big cup.
언어 배우는 걸 큰 컵을 채우는 것처럼 생각해보세요.
Filling a cup?
컵을 채운다고요?
If the cup is empty, nothing can come out.
컵이 비어 있으면 아무것도 나올 수 없어요.
Oh. So we tried to speak before the cup was full.
아. 그러니까 컵이 채워지기 전에 말하려 했던 거네요.
Exactly. Babies fill that cup by listening for one whole year.
정확해요. 아기들은 꼬박 일 년 동안 듣기만 하면서 그 컵을 채워요.
One year of just listening. No speaking at all.
일 년 동안 그냥 듣기만요. 한 마디도 안 하고요.
And when the cup is full, speaking comes out naturally.
컵이 가득 차면 말하기가 자연스럽게 흘러나와요.
So we skipped filling the cup. We never listened enough first.
그러니까 우리는 컵을 채우는 단계를 건너뛴 거군요. 충분히 듣지 않고 시작한 거예요.
Right. Listen first. That is tip one.
맞아요. 먼저 들어요. 그게 팁 1이에요.
Okay. Tip number two. Tell me, Anna.
좋아요. 팁 두 번째예요. 말해봐요, Anna.
Tip two: studying grammar is not the same as practicing conversation.
팁 2: 문법 공부는 대화 연습과 달라요.
What is the difference, exactly?
정확히 어떤 차이가 있나요?
Grammar rules are like a map.
문법 규칙은 지도 같은 거예요.
A map?
지도요?
A map shows how roads connect. It looks very useful.
지도는 도로가 어떻게 연결되는지 보여줘요. 유용해 보이죠.
But a map cannot teach anyone to drive.
하지만 지도가 운전을 가르쳐줄 수는 없어요.
Right. You have to actually get in the car and go.
맞아요. 실제로 차에 타고 달려봐야 하죠.
Conversation is like driving. It comes from doing, not from reading.
대화는 운전 같아요. 읽는 게 아니라 직접 해봐야 느는 거예요.
I studied verb tenses for months. But I could not order a coffee.
저는 몇 달 동안 동사 시제를 공부했어요. 그런데 커피 주문도 못 했죠.
That is so common. Rules are known, but real speaking just freezes up.
정말 흔한 일이에요. 규칙은 알아도 막상 말이 나오지 않는 거죠.
Yes. I just stood there. Totally blank. It was so embarrassing.
맞아요. 그냥 거기 서 있었어요. 완전 백지. 너무 창피했어요.
Tip number three. Jake, this one is personal.
팁 세 번째예요. Jake, 이건 개인적인 얘기예요.
Tip three: being afraid of making mistakes.
팁 3: 실수하는 것에 대한 두려움이에요.
Jake, was speaking English ever terrifying for you?
Jake, 영어로 말하는 게 정말 무서웠던 적 있어요?
Afraid? Anna, I was terrified.
두렵다고요? Anna, 저는 완전 공포였어요.
One time I said "I am boring" instead of "I am bored."
한번은 "I am bored" 대신 "I am boring"이라고 했어요.
Everyone laughed. I wanted to disappear right there.
다들 웃었어요. 그 자리에서 사라지고 싶었죠.
Oh, I understand that feeling. So many people feel the same way.
아, 그 기분 알아요. 정말 많은 분들이 같은 경험을 해요.
But think of learning English like riding a bike.
그런데 영어 배우는 걸 자전거 타는 것처럼 생각해보세요.
A bike?
자전거요?
Learning to ride is impossible without falling a few times.
몇 번 넘어지지 않고는 배울 수가 없어요.
That is true. Falling is just part of the process.
맞아요. 넘어지는 것도 과정의 일부죠.
Every mistake is one step forward. Maybe our listeners feel this too.
모든 실수는 한 걸음 앞으로 나아가는 거예요. 여러분도 이 기분 아시죠?
Tip number four. And this one is very real for me.
팁 네 번째예요. 이건 저한테 정말 현실적인 얘기예요.
Tip four: studying hard for a while, then stopping completely.
팁 4: 한동안 열심히 공부하다가 완전히 멈춰버리는 거예요.
Oh. That was definitely me. I called it my "English month."
아. 완전 저 얘기예요. 저는 그걸 "영어 달"이라고 불렀어요.
One big push, then nothing for three months.
한 번 크게 몰아붙이고, 그다음엔 세 달 동안 아무것도 안 하는 거죠.
Think of your English like your phone battery.
여러분의 영어를 휴대폰 배터리처럼 생각해보세요.
Phone battery?
배터리요?
Charging a little every day keeps it strong and ready.
매일 조금씩 충전하면 항상 강하게 유지돼요.
But charging only once a week means it dies fast.
하지만 일주일에 한 번만 충전하면 금방 방전되죠.
Small practice every day beats big practice once a week.
매일 조금씩 연습하는 게 일주일에 한 번 몰아서 하는 것보다 훨씬 나아요.
Ten minutes every day is better than three hours on Sunday.
매일 10분이 일요일 3시간보다 나아요.
Consistent. That is the key word here.
꾸준히. 여기서 핵심 단어는 그거예요.
Let's do a tiny word tour before we finish.
마치기 전에 간단한 단어 투어를 해볼게요.
I love this part. Ready, everyone?
이 파트 좋아해요. 준비됐나요, 여러분?
First, we said "struggle."
첫 번째, 우리가 말한 단어는 "struggle"이에요.
When you struggle, something is really difficult for you.
struggle한다는 건 뭔가가 정말 어렵다는 뜻이에요.
For example, "I struggle to understand fast English."
예를 들면, "I struggle to understand fast English." 빠른 영어를 이해하기가 힘들어요.
Or, "She struggled in her first English class."
또는, "She struggled in her first English class." 그녀는 첫 영어 수업이 힘들었어요.
Next, "embarrassed."
다음은 "embarrassed"예요.
When you feel embarrassed, you feel bad because of a mistake.
embarrassed는 실수 때문에 창피한 기분이 드는 거예요.
For example, "He felt embarrassed when he said the wrong word."
예를 들면, "He felt embarrassed when he said the wrong word." 틀린 단어를 말했을 때 창피했어요.
Or, "I was embarrassed, but I tried again anyway."
또는, "I was embarrassed, but I tried again anyway." 창피했지만 그래도 다시 시도했어요.
Next, "fluency."
다음은 "fluency"예요.
Fluency means speaking a language easily and naturally.
fluency는 언어를 쉽고 자연스럽게 말하는 능력을 뜻해요.
For example, "Her goal is fluency in English."
예를 들면, "Her goal is fluency in English." 그녀의 목표는 영어 유창성이에요.
Or, "Fluency takes time, but you can get there."
또는, "Fluency takes time, but you can get there." 유창함은 시간이 걸리지만 도달할 수 있어요.
Next, "consistent."
다음은 "consistent"예요.
When you are consistent, you do something regularly, every day.
consistent하다는 건 매일 규칙적으로 꾸준히 한다는 뜻이에요.
For example, "He is consistent with his English practice."
예를 들면, "He is consistent with his English practice." 그는 영어 연습을 꾸준히 해요.
Or, "Consistent effort always brings results."
또는, "Consistent effort always brings results." 꾸준한 노력은 항상 결과를 가져와요.
And last, "natural."
마지막은 "natural"이에요.
When something feels natural, it is easy and comfortable.
natural하다는 건 쉽고 편안하게 느껴진다는 뜻이에요.
For example, "After six months, speaking felt natural to her."
예를 들면, "After six months, speaking felt natural to her." 6개월 후 말하는 게 자연스럽게 느껴졌어요.
Or, "Practice makes English feel natural over time."
또는, "Practice makes English feel natural over time." 연습하면 시간이 지날수록 영어가 자연스러워져요.

단어 하나를 골라서 여러분만의 문장을 댓글에 남겨보세요.
Okay. Let's do a quick recap.
좋아요. 간단히 복습해볼게요.
Tip one: listen first, before you try to speak.
팁 1: 말하기 전에 먼저 들어요.
Tip two: practice real conversation, not just grammar.
팁 2: 문법만이 아니라 실제 대화를 연습하세요.
Tip three: mistakes are okay. They help you grow.
팁 3: 실수해도 괜찮아요. 실수가 성장을 도와줘요.
Tip four: study a little every day. Stay consistent.
팁 4: 매일 조금씩 공부하세요. 꾸준함을 유지하세요.
English feels hard because nobody showed you the right way.
영어가 어려운 건 아무도 올바른 방법을 알려주지 않았기 때문이에요.
But now it is clear. And that changes everything.
하지만 이제 분명해졌잖아요. 그게 모든 걸 바꿔요.
Here is our question for you today.
오늘 여러분에게 질문이 있어요.
