영어 단어를 문장으로 외우는 법Never Learn a Word Alone
A tourist stops you at the bus stop.
버스 정류장에서 여행객 한 명이 말을 걸어요.
She holds out her phone and smiles.
휴대폰을 내밀며 웃어요.
"Could you take a photo?" she asks.
"사진 좀 찍어줄 수 있어요?" 하고 물어요.
You know the word "photo." You know "take."
"photo"라는 단어도 알아요. "take"도 알죠.
But the words won't come out together.
그런데 그 단어들이 하나로 안 나와요.
The words were right there in your head.
단어들은 분명 머릿속에 있었어요.
You just point at the camera and nod.
그냥 카메라를 가리키며 고개만 끄덕여요.
She got her picture. You said nothing.
여행객은 사진을 얻었고, 나는 한마디도 못 했어요.
None of your words would hold hands.
내 단어들은 서로 손을 잡지 못했어요.
They were all there, but they stayed strangers.
다들 거기 있었지만, 서로 남남이었어요.
If you know that feeling, stay with me.
이 기분을 안다면, 오늘 저와 함께해요.
Welcome to Bileo English.
Bileo English에 오신 걸 환영해요.
I'm really glad you're here today.
오늘 와줘서 정말 반가워요.
Today's small goal is simple.
오늘의 작은 목표는 간단해요.
Learn new words inside whole sentences.
새 단어를 문장 통째로 외우는 거예요.
Not alone. Not in a list.
따로따로가 아니라. 목록으로가 아니라.
By the end, your words will start to hold hands.
끝날 때쯤엔, 단어들이 서로 손을 잡기 시작할 거예요.
Let me tell you about a student of mine.
제 학생 한 명 이야기를 들려줄게요.
Her name was Sua, and she worked hard.
이름은 수아였고, 정말 열심히 했어요.
She kept a thick notebook on the subway.
지하철에서 늘 두꺼운 단어장을 들여다봤죠.
Every word sat there with its Korean meaning.
단어마다 옆에 한국어 뜻이 적혀 있었어요.
She could pass any vocabulary test with ease.
어떤 단어 시험도 가뿐히 통과할 정도였죠.
Then one morning, a tourist asked for a photo.
그러던 어느 날 아침, 여행객이 사진을 찍어달라 했어요.
Sua froze, just like you did.
수아도 똑같이 얼어붙었어요.
The word photo was there, but it stood alone.
photo라는 단어는 있었지만, 혼자 서 있었어요.
The words were in her notebook, not her mouth.
단어는 단어장 속에 있었지, 입에는 없었어요.
She smiled, took the picture, and felt small.
웃으며 사진을 찍어줬지만, 마음이 작아졌어요.
So we changed one thing, and only one.
그래서 딱 한 가지만 바꿨어요.
It was small, but it changed everything.
작았지만, 모든 걸 바꿨어요.
Instead of single words, she learned short sentences.
단어 하나 대신, 짧은 문장을 외우게 했어요.
One word, one real sentence around it.
단어 하나에, 그걸 감싼 진짜 문장 하나요.
She wrote fewer words, but kept far more.
단어는 더 적게 적었는데, 훨씬 더 많이 남았어요.
A month later, the photo moment came again.
한 달 뒤, 사진 찍어달라는 순간이 다시 왔어요.
This time, the whole sentence came out easily.
이번엔 문장 전체가 술술 나왔어요.
She even asked the tourist where they were from.
심지어 여행객에게 어디서 왔는지도 물었어요.
That's the power of learning in chunks.
이게 바로 덩어리로 외우는 힘이에요.
So why does this work so well?
그럼 왜 이게 이렇게 잘 될까요?
A single word is like one loose brick.
단어 하나는 낱장 벽돌 하나 같아요.
It has no shape, and nowhere to sit.
모양도 없고, 놓일 자리도 없죠.
You can hold it, but you can't build with it.
쥐고는 있지만, 그걸로 뭘 지을 순 없죠.
But a sentence gives that word a home.
하지만 문장은 그 단어에게 집을 줘요.
There's another reason, and it's a big one.
이유가 하나 더 있는데, 이게 꽤 커요.
One word can mean many things at once.
단어 하나는 동시에 여러 뜻을 가질 수 있어요.
Alone, it makes you stop and wonder which one.
혼자면, 어느 뜻인지 멈춰 고민하게 돼요.
Take the word "make." On its own, it's slippery.
"make"를 보세요. 혼자 있으면 미끄러워요.
But "make a decision" is clear and complete.
하지만 "make a decision"은 명확하고 완결돼 있어요.
The chunk shows you how the word really works.
덩어리는 그 단어가 실제로 어떻게 쓰이는지 보여줘요.
So you learn the meaning and the grammar together.
그래서 뜻과 문법을 한꺼번에 배우게 돼요.
The little words come free, already in the right place.
작은 단어들은 덤으로, 이미 제자리에 붙어서 와요.
Here's your key phrase for today.
오늘의 핵심 표현이에요.
"Learn the chunk, not the word."
"단어 말고 덩어리를 외워라."
A chunk is a group of words that travel together.
덩어리는 함께 붙어 다니는 단어 묶음이에요.
They show up as a team, so learn them as one.
한 팀으로 오니까, 한 덩어리로 외우세요.
"Take a photo." "Make a decision." "Catch a cold."
"Take a photo." "Make a decision." "Catch a cold."
You don't learn "photo." You learn "take a photo."
"photo"만 외우지 않아요. "take a photo"로 외워요.
Let's try it together.
함께 해봐요.
I'll say a sentence. You repeat after me.
제가 문장을 말할게요. 저를 따라 말하세요.
Could you take a photo for me?
사진 한 장 찍어줄 수 있어요?
Now you repeat.
이제 따라 해보세요.
I need to make a decision.
결정을 내려야 해요.
Now you repeat.
이제 따라 해보세요.
I think I caught a cold.
감기에 걸린 것 같아요.
Now you repeat.
이제 따라 해보세요.
Very good.
잘 했어요.
Feel how the words arrived as one piece?
단어들이 한 덩어리로 나온 게 느껴지죠?
That's it. That's learning in chunks.
그게 다예요. 이게 덩어리로 외우기예요.
Tip number one. Save the sentence, not the word.
팁 하나. 단어가 아니라 문장을 저장하세요.
When you meet a new word, don't write it alone.
새 단어를 만나면, 단어만 적지 마세요.
Write the whole sentence where you found it.
그 단어를 찾은 문장을 통째로 적으세요.
Maybe you heard it in a show or a song.
드라마나 노래에서 들었을 수도 있어요.
Keep the real sentence, the one that made you smile.
나를 웃게 했던 그 진짜 문장을 남기세요.
A sentence from real life beats a made-up one.
실제 생활에서 만난 문장이 지어낸 문장보다 나아요.
A textbook line is clean but easy to forget.
교과서 문장은 깔끔하지만 쉽게 잊혀요.
It came with a feeling, and feelings help memory.
그 문장엔 감정이 딸려 왔고, 감정은 기억을 도와줘요.
Think of how you learned words as a child.
어릴 때 단어를 어떻게 배웠는지 떠올려 보세요.
You never memorized a list. You lived them.
목록을 외운 적 없어요. 단어를 살아냈죠.
The word alone is weak. The sentence is strong.
단어 혼자는 약해요. 문장은 강해요.
Let's try it together.
함께 해봐요.
I'll say a sentence. You repeat after me.
제가 문장을 말할게요. 저를 따라 말하세요.
I'd like to make an appointment.
예약을 하나 잡고 싶어요.
Now you repeat.
이제 따라 해보세요.
Let's take a look at this.
이걸 한번 같이 살펴봐요.
Now you repeat.
이제 따라 해보세요.
Can you take a photo of us?
우리 사진 한 장 찍어줄 수 있어요?
Now you repeat.
이제 따라 해보세요.
Very good.
잘 했어요.
Tip number two. Say it out loud, many times.
팁 둘. 소리 내어, 여러 번 말하세요.
A word in your eyes is not yet yours.
눈으로만 본 단어는 아직 내 것이 아니에요.
A word in your mouth starts to become yours.
입으로 나온 단어가 내 것이 되기 시작해요.
So read the sentence out loud, slowly.
그러니 문장을 소리 내어, 천천히 읽으세요.
Feel it in your mouth, not just your eyes.
눈으로만 말고, 입으로 느껴 보세요.
Then say it faster, like real speech.
그다음엔 실제 말처럼 빠르게 말해보세요.
Let the words melt into one another.
단어들이 서로 스며들게 두세요.
Notice how the words connect. "Take a" becomes "take-a."
단어들이 어떻게 이어지는지 보세요. "Take a"가 "take-a"처럼 돼요.
Your mouth learns the shape of the whole chunk.
입이 덩어리 전체의 모양을 익혀요.
When the moment comes, the chunk arrives whole.
그 순간이 오면, 덩어리가 통째로 나와요.
You won't build it word by word anymore.
이제 단어를 하나씩 조립하지 않아요.
Say it five times today, and it's half yours.
오늘 다섯 번만 말해보면, 벌써 절반은 내 거예요.
Mistakes are fine here. They're part of the work.
여기선 실수해도 괜찮아요. 그것도 연습이에요.
Tip number three. Change one small piece.
팁 셋. 작은 조각 하나를 바꿔보세요.
Once a chunk feels easy, play with it.
덩어리가 쉬워지면, 가지고 놀아보세요.
Take "make a decision" and swap one word.
"make a decision"에서 한 단어만 바꿔요.
"Make a plan." "Make a mistake." "Make a promise."
"Make a plan." "Make a mistake." "Make a promise."
You keep the pattern and change one piece.
틀은 그대로 두고, 조각 하나만 바꿔요.
The pattern is safe, so be brave with the word.
틀이 든든하니까, 단어는 마음껏 바꿔도 돼요.
Try "take a photo" too. "Take a break."
"take a photo"로도 해보세요. "Take a break."
"Take a seat." "Take a walk." "Take a rest."
"Take a seat." "Take a walk." "Take a rest."
One chunk becomes ten sentences you can use.
덩어리 하나가 쓸 수 있는 문장 열 개가 돼요.
Same shape, new word, a brand new sentence.
같은 틀, 새 단어, 완전히 새 문장이에요.
Now the word isn't just remembered. It's ready.
이제 단어는 그냥 외운 게 아니에요. 쓸 준비가 됐어요.
That's the difference between knowing and using.
그게 아는 것과 쓰는 것의 차이예요.
And a word you can use is a word you own.
쓸 수 있는 단어가 진짜 내 단어예요.
So how do you fit this into a busy day?
그럼 바쁜 하루에 이걸 어떻게 끼워 넣을까요?
You don't need a desk or a quiet hour.
책상도, 조용한 한 시간도 필요 없어요.
You just need a few small moments you already have.
이미 가진 짧은 순간 몇 개면 충분해요.
Pick three chunks in the morning, just three.
아침에 덩어리 세 개만 고르세요, 딱 세 개.
Say them on the bus, or while you cook.
버스에서, 아니면 요리하면서 말해보세요.
Whisper them while you wait for your coffee.
커피를 기다리며 속으로 되뇌어보세요.
No one has to hear you. It still counts.
아무도 안 들어도 돼요. 그래도 연습이에요.
Your day is full of small empty minutes.
하루엔 짧은 빈 시간이 가득해요.
Even five to ten minutes a day is real practice.
하루 5분에서 10분이면 진짜 연습이에요.
Keep your chunks in one place, like a notes app.
덩어리는 메모 앱처럼 한곳에 모아두세요.
Then, once a week, read the old ones again.
그리고 일주일에 한 번, 예전 것들을 다시 읽어요.
Seeing them again is what makes them stay.
다시 보는 것, 그게 오래 남게 하는 힘이에요.
Your best chunks will come back on their own.
제일 좋은 덩어리는 알아서 다시 찾아와요.
Small actions become strong habits.
작은 행동이 강한 습관이 돼요.
Here's your plan for today.
오늘의 계획이에요.
Learn the chunk, not the word.
단어 말고 덩어리를 외우세요.
Save the sentence, say it out loud, then change one piece.
문장을 저장하고, 소리 내어 말하고, 조각 하나를 바꾸세요.
Three simple steps, and you already know them all.
간단한 세 단계, 이미 다 아는 거예요.
Remember that tourist at the bus stop?
버스 정류장의 그 여행객, 기억나죠?
Next time, the whole sentence will be ready.
다음엔 문장 전체가 준비돼 있을 거예요.
It won't happen all at once, and that's okay.
한 번에 다 되진 않아요, 그래도 괜찮아요.
Every chunk you keep is one more word that stays.
붙잡은 덩어리 하나하나가 남는 단어 하나예요.
Slowly, your quiet words start to speak.
천천히, 조용하던 단어들이 말하기 시작해요.
The list never worked because words don't live alone.
목록이 안 통했던 건 단어가 혼자 못 살아서예요.
They need each other to make sense, the way people do.
사람들이 그렇듯, 단어도 서로가 있어야 뜻이 통해요.
Give each word a sentence, and it will stay.
단어마다 문장을 주면, 그 단어가 곁에 남아요.
Your words are learning to hold hands now.
이제 단어들이 서로 손을 잡는 법을 배우고 있어요.
That's a quiet change, but it lasts.
조용한 변화지만, 오래 가요.
And it started the day you stopped learning alone.
그리고 그건 혼자 외우기를 멈춘 날 시작됐어요.
See you next time.
다음 시간에 만나요.
